Hampton Mecca
Always a real event. Who remembers The Strawberry Banks? It was the go-to motel it seems. Later in the 80's or early 90's, they started screening reservations made for late march! no sir, i AM sorry, but we will actually be CLOSED for repairs march 21, 22 and 23.... energy is great but Brent's sound is a little rinky dink during this period. guess Healy was always high since the sound out of the gate DID always kind of suck.

Great Show
This was actually my first of 90 Greatful Dead shows. Even though I liked the Dead, I wasn't aware they were still touring until I went to NC State in 1982-83 and a friend of mine said they were playing in Hampton. We went on up with a few friends and had a great time. I was tripping my brains out on penguin acid and loved it. I was amazed at how casual the Dead was but impressed at the music. I really enjoyed the China Cat - Rider in the first set and the Help on The way - Slipknot-Franklins Tower was fantastict. Truckin' was also good to see. It got me hooked.

Its All About the China Cat-Rider
Jerry and the boys flub their way through Set I, but Jerry really gets In The Zone during China Cat. Those solos still sends chills.

Old School/New School
I think it's funny when so-called 'old' heads wax on about the 'glory' days like they are talking about a basketball team back in the day rather than a rock band. The dead is the harlem globetrotters.

Help/Slip/Franklins
I guess being there helped. BUT...It was the opening show of the East Coast tour that year. The crowd went NUTS when they opened the second set. It was loud, and just amazing. The whole show was quite simply AWESOME!

China>Rider at 18 mins is immense
Whole first set is great although on this board especially in Brown Eyed Women Brent is set too loud and you cannot hear Phil's bombs properly in Berth>Greatest Story.
I was at college in Boston and when we got wind of the Help>Slip>Franklins which is the first time they had played that on the East Coast in years we were all really excited so as they wound their way North the reports back were stunning - This was a legendery tour and I agree with the others about this being the last of the old school. Tickets were easy to come by and the music was typically pretty solid. The bad shows increased exponentially after Jerry got back on the junk and ruined it for everyone. I should also add that they used the tease more and more during this period which was also really frustrating listen to the end of Truckin which is great and everyone is into it and then they spoof Smokestack and then fake Other One it just sucked when they did that... Just play it what are you waiting for???
* Little hint of 'Bob Star' before Throwing Stones.
** Binghampton a couple of nights after this is a must.

last of old school
You were very lucky and I agree, although I would argue the 84 tour is probably truley last of the old school Dead Head scene on the road with the band albeit alot bigger from previous tour. I think 1983 was a first for alot Heads. A new generation, I wasn't old enough 12 at the time. In my opinion 82 was the end of an era for the Heads that attended the shows in the 70's. If you like this stuff, the early 80's vibe check out the poplar creek 83 that's old school by definition and the Madison show in 83'. While your at it, my all time favorite run of three venues back to back. The Greek,Saratoga and Merriweather in 1983 is the epitomy of killer GD and if you think they lost it in 84 check out the Marin Spring shows in Jerrys back yard. That run along with Fall 84 mainly Augusta and Berkeley thats top 10 old school Dead in my book. Anyway, The rumors and reality of Jerry partying as hard as the crowd or harder made it all the while crazier. Big Boss all wacked out crushin tune after tune. This was gonzo shit here at Spaceship Hampton a couple years before 20yr tour in 85 and touch of Grey radio hit, war on drugs and just plain ole' huge success in popularity.Hey lets go dose in the parking lots and fields of this Grateful Dead concert shit Iam hearing about. What do they sound like whats the music like? "nothin like a Grateful Dead show" what's that all about? I don't know but there playin' out at Alpine this summer (87) there's a bunch of freaks and hot hippie chics traveling around city to city with good drugs and all the beer you can drink (some oat-meal stout?) So there you have it blame it on grateness. It was a beatiful thing going on underground and the masses found out about it and soon caught up. St. Jerry falls for the first time and a re-vived Dead hit the streets hard in the late 80's an slowly but surely there you have it, no longer will you be in the company of Phil dropping bombs on a intimate crowd of maybe 50 shroomed out Heads during a sound check.

ps. nice sound crisp and tight.

Great show and the set list was really awesome. I loved the "West LA Fadeaway" Really good download. The vocals overpower a lot of the music. 5 for set list and 4 for quality. 4.5

Another Wife Story
This is the show I was looking forward to hearing as a board, I had always had a too fast or slow AUD of this. This is sweet, the West LA and Esau (shadow boxing) were early versions, and Jerry's soulful voice and noodling strokes throught the short but blazin Help>Slip was a treat. Phil dropped alot of bombs and a tradition for Hampton...smokestack,,no other venue got it twice This was my wife's first show. We had a blast dancing and she still talks about memories of the dancers twirling in doorways and hallways of Hampton.

my wife, loves this show(and she hates thedead) That should say it all. The vocals are sweet, and everyone is on key ,great sepration in the mix. Everyone Jammmed Jerry sounds great, this era 83-84 is a very under rated time. Set lists look bad on paper(not this show) but what they explored musically was very trippy.Very smokin DEAD...

Satisfaction!
This is a rollicking show with a nifty Bertha > Promised opener, Jerry has a sick tone on West LA, excellent Esau, flaming china > rider to end 1st set. H>S>F is great and leads into a Spoonful/Smokestack type jam. Lots of weird teases...e.g. Jerry is playing bob's Black Throated Wind lick over and over again as part of the jam leading into Black Peter! Then a dance-out-the-door GDTRFB>OMSN, e: Satisfaction ender. Weird, ripping and cool all at the same time...this is what 83-84 is all about.
Sound is decent. At first, I thought it was great, but there is some bottom end missing and there are some splices b/w songs.
Great overall. Get it! Performance=4.5 Setlist=4.5 Sound=4...4.33 overall...
